March 29th Update

I skied at the LHS Trail late morning today with no-wax classic skis. The trail is just starting to melt down to vegetation by the entrance gate and is getting thin in a couple of places in the track out on the loop. It is always good to be able to ski on my birthday and this makes 17 weeks of continuous snow cover. I turned off the lights a few days ago.

I assume it will be skiable here and at Sisters' Farm at least through the weekend if you time the daily thaw (and possibly longer if we get the predicted snowstorm this week)..

The interior wiring and installation of outlets and lights at the cabin are finished, but it still needs to be connected to the trail grid.

This will be from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday, March 2nd at the trailhead and warming hut for the Ladysmith High School Lighted Trail. People are wellcome to cross country ski or snowshoe (but not hike) on the trail and beverages and snacks will be provided. If you don't have your own gear, call 532-2151 to reserve snowshoes. The will be free and in sizes for adolescents and adults. You can get directions to the trail on the Trail Maps page of this site. The activity is co-sponsored by LATA and by the UW-Extension-Healthy Lifestyles for Rusk County.

Social Ski and Gathering on Saturday, January 18th

The plan is to ski and then meet afterwards at the Tee-Away at 2 p.m. The Golf Course will not be groomed and with the predicted dangerous windchill, skiing at LHS (or skipping the skiing) might be a better idea.

Second LATA Skandic Snowmobile. A used Skandic was picked up July 30, so there will be one available for Sisters' Farm and one for LHS. This will lead to quicker grooming after new snowfalls and provide a backup if we have mechanical problems. See the News page for more information.

Sisters' Farm Eagles. This adult eagle was photographed along the Flambeau River at Sisters' Farm on July 25th. This is the first time in 19 years that no chicks hatched at this nest or the nest across the river.

2004 Log Jam Moutain Bike Race

42 racers competed in the 14 mile Sport Class and the 26 mile Expert Class races today. Fear of wet conditions may have discouraged some riders from showing up but the conditions were surprisingly good. Todd McFadden was 1st in the Expert Class. Jesrin Gaier was the 1st overall in the Sport Class with Jessica Martin the female winner. Complete results are now online.

Other Ladysmith Trails

Although LATA only maintains LHS and Sisters' Farm trails, there are other recreational trails in and near Ladysmith. There are several miles of trails at the Flambeau Mine site and the City of Ladysmith is developing the Riverview Trail along the south bank of the Flambeau River, connecting County G and State 27. Both can be used for snowshoeing, ungroomed skiing, hiking, or mountain biking.

A new silent sport and outdoor recreation group has recently formed in the Ladysmith Area. The purpose of this group is to promote, develop, educate, and enjoy silent sports in the Ladysmith Area. This new group has been formed as the Ladysmith Area Trails Association or (LATA).

LATA will be assuming the responsibility of developing and maintaining the Sisters Farm trail system and the Ladysmith High School lighted loop that were formerly groomed by the Rusk County Trail Assocation. LATA will be about more than just trails; we are planning on providing opportunities for participation in silent sports such as mountain biking, hiking, cross country skiing, running, kayaking, canoeing, and general outdoor fun in the Ladysmith Area.

Membership fees have been established at $15.00 per individual and $25.00 for a family. Your membership not only makes you a voting member of LATA, but will also provide for the promotion of group rides, clinics, youth educational programs, and of course, trail development.
